His picture in the November issue of Cosmopolitan magazine is easy on the eyes, to say the least.
On the glossy page, Ryan Chenevert is walking up the pool steps wearing wet swim trunks and an arguably perfect smile. He’s Louisiana’s Hottest Bachelor, and he lives right here in Baton Rouge.
“I have never left Baton Rouge,” Chenevert said. “I don’t see myself leaving. I like Baton Rouge.”
Chenevert, a recent graduate of LSU Law, was nominated for the contest by his undergraduate classmate and friend Beth Burris.
“We were both accounting majors at LSU,” Burris said. “We became friends, and I just thought he would be a great subject for Cosmo.”
After Burris sent in a few pictures of Chenevert, she received an email from the magazine asking for more pictures. Burris planned a photo shoot at her family’s home and sent the additional shots to Cosmopolitan.
“I had just taken my last final ever,” Chenevert said. “I was emotionally and physically exhausted and I get this call saying I was picked. I thought it had to be a joke.”
Chenevert, along with other contestants, flew to New York for a photo shoot in the Hamptons that would be published online and in the magazine.
“I’ve never done anything like that,” he said. “But the most surreal part was seeing the magazine, with my picture on the same pages as famous people.”
For the last week, Cosmopolitan has encouraged readers and fans to vote (one vote per email address) for their favorite bachelor by visiting the website.
“The competition is stiff,” Chenevert said. “There’s an Olympic athlete, a guy who works for a NASCAR pit crew.”
Chenevert is selling himself short.
Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Chenevert has always wanted to be lawyer.
“I saw a Morris Bart commercial on TV and wanted to be a lawyer,” he said. “I am shy and I never argue, but I kept the drive to be a lawyer.”
After graduation, Chenevert started working as a clerk for a judge. While he enjoys clerking so far, his ultimate goal is to open his own practice working criminal and civil law.
Recalling popular televised trials, such as the OJ Simpson and the Casey Anthony cases, Chenevert would love to have his day in court.
“If your case goes to trial, that’s really exciting,” he said. “You get to be so animated. You’re essentially winning the jury over with your performance.”
Since he found out about his title as Louisiana’s Hottest Bachelor at nearly the start of his job, he said telling the judge was intimidating.
“I had to tell him since it would be in print and I would need time off,” he said. “But I have been blown away by the support and encouragement I’ve received.”
For the contest, Chenevert participated in an interview with the magazine, which states he’s been loyal to every woman he’s dated, laser tag was his best date ever, and getting his humor is essential for a relationship.
“I have the driest sense of humor,” Chenevert said. “If we go on a date and nobody’s laughing, that’s not good. I’d much rather be laughing.”
Today, Chenevert says he’s single by choice, and would like to be secure in his career before settling down.
“In a backward way, I think not looking provides an opportunity to meet someone,” he said. “If you’re always looking, you’re willing to settle. Of course I don’t have my eyes closed. If there’s a girl that catches my eye, we’ll see what happens.”
Chenevert is open to someone who is strong in their relationships with family, friends, and faith, much like he is.
“He’s a great catch by standard definition,” Burris said. “He’s a good Christian man with good values, he’s been successful, and he’s ambitious.”
The winner of the contest receives a prize of $10,000. The 10 contestants with the highest number of votes are put into the running before the Cosmopolitan editors pick the final winner. Voting ends Oct. 18 and the winner is announced the same day. Chenevert will hear the announcement live in New York City at the official Bachelor Party.
If he wins, Chenevert plans to give a portion of the money to charity, take some of his friends out for drinks, and use the rest to help pay student loans.
“I’m not trying to pursue modeling or acting, and definitely no reality shows,” he said. “Do I want recognition for being Bachelor of the Year? No. Do I want to win $10,000? Yes.”
Chenevert finds out the contest results within a week of getting his bar exam score.
“This is just part of the journey. Overall it’s been a great experience and I’m soaking this all in,” he said with his signature smile. “I’m hoping for a great October.”
