Music and Movies on the Lawn gets silly
By Christie Matherne
Published May 25, 2011Who wouldn’t start laughing if another person were hit in the head with a frying pan? The bonk sound heard in one’s head is usually enough to incite a memory of The Three Stooges or Charlie Chaplin. That’s why you’re giggling.
City Park sees the return of Movies and Music on the Lawn on May 28, sponsored by Baton Rouge Gallery. This year, they’re doing something a little different.
“People associate the program with older movies,” said Jason Andreasen, director of Baton Rouge Gallery. They’re aiming to change that perception with a bit sillier angle – and maybe a few banana peels.
The monthly summer movie roster for 2011 includes greats such as The Kid (Charlie Chaplin), Safety Last (Harold Lloyd), Silent Movie (Mel Brooks), and The Strong Man (Harry Langdon). On May 28, Sherlock Jr. with Buster Keaton is showing.
The second element is the music. All the films are silent, and the Gallery has lined up different bands tasked with scoring the movies in real-time. The bands scheduled to meet the challenge are The (New) Zeelanders, Righteous Buddha, and The Incense Merchants, who will alternate performances at the once-a-month showings.
On May 28, see Buster Keaton in Sherlock Jr., scored by The (New) Zeelanders. Admission is $5, and free for Baton Rouge Gallery members. Admission includes unlimited popcorn, and the film begins at 8 p.m. or sunset, whichever happens later. Visit www.BatonRougeGallery.com for the full season schedule.
