The Flaming Lips are set to play the Varsity Theatre, June 28, as part of their attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most live concerts in multiple cities in 24 hours. Givers will open the show.
Update: Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $20
Update: Tickets will go on sale 10 a.m. Friday, through the Varsity's website. www.varsitytheatre.com.
Now, if you haven’t already run off to pick up tickets, here’s more of the story.
Viacom Music Group — the company that owns MTV, VH1, CMT and Logo — have just announced the city stops and supporting acts for The Flaming Lips’ record attempt.
The marathon will coincide with the O Music Awards, a digitally driven awards program that will also attempt the world’s first 24-hour awards show, complete with a live stream of all eight Flaming Lips concert stops and the band’s adventures along the way.
The band will board a vintage tour bus they’ve christened “Endeavor” in Memphis, Tenn., and will zigzag through the Mississippi Delta region until they hit New Orleans. All in an attempt to dethrone Jay-Z, the current record holder.
If anyone wants to jump in a VW bus and follow the band, The Flaming Lips are scheduled to hit Memphis with New Fumes; Clarksdale with Gary Clark Jr.; Oxford with Grace Potter and The Nocturnals; Jackson with Neon Indian; Hattiesburg with Hunter Hayes; Biloxi, but the artist is TBA; Baton Rouge with Givers; and New Orleans with Grimes.
Check back with Dig as we go further into the O Music Awards in next week’s issue.
