It took a few minutes of digging, but I finally found AF THE NAYSAYER x Luke St. John’s track “The A.M.” in the Tap Tap Revenge Tour free song store. It’s a little unfortunate the song isn’t easier to find, pushed to the back in favor of a front page filled with downloads by Linkin Park (shudder) or Nickelback (double shudder), but the fact that two local musicians were able to get a song on the popular mobile video game is an impressive feat in itself.
If you haven’t experienced Tap Tap Revenge, think of it as Guitar Hero or Rock Band for the iPhone or iPad. A string of notes fly down the screen in three columns as the player taps the corresponding column to gain points and play the song. It can give you a finger cramp pretty fast. And AF THE NAYSAYER x Luke St. John’s “The A.M.” will give you a cramp pretty fast.
I found my fingers flying across the columns, and it still took me six tries to finally get three stars. It’s a challenging song, but pay close enough attention and you start to pick up the bass beat and rhythm. The falling notes in “The A.M.” match up with the rhythm extremely well, and before I knew it, I was more engaged with the song than the game itself.
With New Orleans producer, AF, creating his signature minimal beat overlaid with Baton Rouge native, St. John’s smooth flow about a day in the life in Baton Rouge, “The A.M.” is really a signature AF THE NAYSAYER x Luke St. John track. The pair have worked closely over the last year, and “The A.M.” puts the two doing what they know best. Just around 2 minutes long, the song isn’t extravagant or a daring example of their work, but considering it’s for use in a popular video game, it seems a fitting introduction for people who might learn about the duo’s music through Tap Tap Revenge.
Tap Tap Revenge Tour is free through the Apple App Store, and “The A.M.” is a free download. If you like challenging music games, or have about 10 minutes to kill, this is a great song to try out. Just dig past the Maroon Five and Rihanna songs.
