Six soon-to-open restaurants you need to know about

Baton Rouge may not have the culinary notoriety of the Big Easy, but counting the Capital City out, as a restaurant hotspot would be a mistake. Here are a few joints on the way that are sure to do the city proud.

City Pork Kitchen and Pie

The brainchild of LSU alumni Chase Lyons and Trey Williams, City Pork is bringing back the old-school butcher style, one pulled-pork sandwich at a time. The place is getting plenty of attention these days, as one of the most exciting new restaurants in town and it’s pretty obvious why. They describe themselves as “a neighborhood deli, sandwich shop, and charcuterie specializing in house-made meats, pickles, condiments and sides,” which is a bit modest.

But unbeknownst to much of the public, a third location is set to be located on Exchequer Street. This location will focus on country style breakfasts, desserts, sandwiches and salads. An opening date has yet to be announced.

Your Mom’s Restaurant and Bar

Named to invoke a homey feeling, Your Mom’s Restaurant and Bar will be opening a second location on West Lee to complement the original spot in Hammond. Known for juicy hamburgers and other bar food staples, Your Mom’s is the latest to plant their flag in the shopping center that also houses Winn-Dixie and Fuzzy’s. The location set square between campus and the housing jungle along Nicholson is sure to make Your Mom’s one of the year’s hottest eating hotspots! While there’s plenty of burger competitors, can we really have too many choices?

Barring any interruptions, Your Mom’s is expected to open its doors by the end of the fall.

A pair of newbies to the restaurant business, brothers Jason and Brian Lees have begun to set up what is sure to become a seafood staple in the area. Roux 61 will boast an extensive menu of southern classics like poboys, burgers, boiled seafood, steaks, salads, oysters, soups, and other specialties. It’s more than a mouth-full and while selecting what to order may be a daunting task, rest assured that there are no bad options on the menu. Roux 61 is set to take over the location that formerly housed Boutin’s Restaurant on Bluebonnet.

Lasseigne’s American Grill

Welcome Lasseigne’s American Grill! Under new management and with a new vision, Lasseigne’s will be taking over the Perkins Road location with the intention of reinventing the restaurant into an accessible and delicious Creole and Italian joint that’s perfect for the whole family. Check out their Facebook page to see that they’ve been hard at work with new renovations to make the place better than ever, so keep an eye on this up and coming restaurant as they look to become the newest player in the competitive Italian cuisine market.

Like its restaurant, Lasseigne’s website is under construction as well though both are expected to open in November. You can keep up with its progress on Facebook.

Canefield Tavern: Southern Kitchen & Bar

Days away from the grand opening, Canefield Tavern, located in the old Brewbacher’s spot on Nicholson, is making a buzz in the BR the food scene. Part of a family of restaurants like Eat New Orleans and Cafe at the Square, Canefield is owned by David Smith and Doug Hary.

The future resident of the Nicholson location is set to serve both breakfast and lunch that hark back to more classic Southern offerings like fried chicken, gumbo, and a rotating cast of side dishes. It’s also slated to include a “Build Your Own Bloody Mary Bar” on Saturdays and Sundays for brunch. Keep on the lookout as the restaurant is said to be making its mid-October opening, making it a nearby brunch destination.

Goûter Restaurant

Playing off the French word for “taste,” Goûter Restaurant is making its way to the capital city late this year. The kitchen of Goûter will be helmed by Chris Wadsworth, of Triumph Kitchen and Restaurant IPO fame, and will be a small plate restaurant that celebrates “all things Louisiana found in our bayous, swamps and woods one small plate at a time.” This up and coming Southern delicacy restaurant on Government Street is sure to bring delicious food and a quality atmosphere to those who pride themselves on their Louisiana heritage.

Goûter is currently under construction and an expected opening day is to be announced.
